Establishment and development of a local youth radio to be broadcasted through Ozurgeti district college, Georgia.
Status: funded
Country: Georgia
Topics: IT, Media, Arts & Communication , Developing Youth Facilities or a Youth organization
+ Context

Ozurgeti is a big district in the Guria region  of Western Georgia, situated in a mountainous area and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Ozurgeti has 18,000 inhabitants, primarily Geogians who are famous for their polyphonic folk songs and a joking. During the Soviet period the region was prosperous , being well known for the manufacturing of tea products, but after the destruction of Soviet regime, Ozurgeti became a poor and deprioritized region . Local inhabitants became unemployed with the dissolution of the tea production market and sales of tea in Russia ceased.

Opportunities for the youth of the district are restricted . Out migration by the youth to Georiga's capital city is high, but those who don't migrate are constrained. Internet services are not well developed ; TV companies work only one day a week and radio waves are not accessible for the local youth populations. Useful information normally accessible to the youth is therefore severly restricted. Our youth are therefore nick named "the birds without wings" . Local students from poor socio-economic backgrounds are very indifferent and lack the desire to change due to the lack of experience, wider knowledge and support they have access too. An example of this is Ozurgeti industrial-pedagogical college, where 347 students study, all coming from poor socio-economic backgrounds.

+ Description

Our team will establish and develop a youth led radio , to be used as a means of communicating information to the youth. The radio programs will be broadcasted throughout the Ozurgeti district’s college to discuss current youth issues and problems. Renovation of the broadcasting and editorial room will be carried out by our team and project volunteers. Audio equipment (tape recorders, amps and speakers) will then be installed in the corridors of the college

A media group of students will be established alongside the project and training will be provided by our local partner NGO- Student-Youth Council. The media group will be responsible for collecting , analyzing and spreading information relevant to employment opportunities, education for the youth, as well as information relating to program goals such as the Millennium goals and Be the Change! through the radio. The media group will coordinate the design of the radio programs produced once training has been completed. ‘Open airwaves ’ will be a feature of this radio design, where representatives from different authorities, will be invited to offer professional and legal advice for the local youth on relevant topics. It is hoped that by doing this, close connections and contacts will be established between the local youth and radio guests.

The radio programs will be broadcasted during breaks between lectures , five days a week.
